Modded UK 2004 @ West Moore Farm Rainham, Kent
To make a change for this event I decided to get an almost proper night’s sleep before, this enabled me to get up and get to the meeting point with plenty of time to spare.
Unfortunately the same could not be said of the fellow participants in the convoy to the show, naming no names lol, needless to say after an hour of waiting, and watching other convoys come and go, the rest of the Girls N Motors crew arrived and we prepared for the journey down to the show.
After a nice cruise with only one minor deviation and one minor mishap on the way, again naming no names, you know who you are, we arrived to find a small queue of (mainly Subaru) cars waiting to get in. After gaining entry over a nice dirt track, (fine for the Subaru’s) but god knows how Rick got the liner over it because my car didn’t enjoy it and his is lower than my VR. Paula and Rick peeled off towards the Club stand and I headed off to the far reaches of the visitors car park over more bumpy grassy land, one of the disadvantages of getting there early and not being on a stand, having to walk half a mile to get back to the show.
Once parked and suitably attired for the warm weather that had been forecast, I headed towards the main show ground past the toilets, (all about 8 of them?), and in between the fun fair rides. I joined in with the rest of the Girl Racers stand, and then remembered the advantage of not being on a stand, I didn’t have to clean my car of all the bugs it had attracted on the journey. However I did have the pleasure of watching everyone else do theirs. At least this gave me time to introduce myself to the members of Girls N Motors I had not met before, to be more precise, everyone except Paula. Big shouts to Sarah, Rick and Jamie, good to meet you all in person finally. Also hello to Tim, Ricks mate, who was also with us, an honorary moderator for the day.
With the sun trying very hard to make an appearance, and a plentiful supply of cars arriving we decided to have a bit of a look round. First off the Girl Racer stand, which stood out really because of the large amount of smart cars on show, including many peoples favourite, the furry one. Owing a large slice of inspiration to Sully the big monster from Monsters Inc, it really drew a lot of attention and for some reason because I was standing next to it, looking the other way I might add, a lot of people thought it was mine? What this says about me I don’t know?
Directly opposite was the Rip Speed stand containing a lot of high quality motors. It was still early but already a lot of people had arrived, and the stall and food sellers were doing very good business, especially from Jamie, for such a skinny guy he sure can put the food away. Looking round the cars on display you could tell there were lots of other shows on that day, TOTB, Ford Fair and London Volksfest to name a few. However there was still a wide variety of cars on show, from the usual Corsas, Saxos and Novas, through to the mid range motors like Escourts and Golfs, all the way up to Subarus Skylines and Porsches and Lamborghinis. There was even a mini Delorian show with about 7 of them in a row. Fan’bloody’tastic! Especially the one with the number plate which read as Back In Time. That put a smile on my face. Especially for Sarah and as I have now seen some pictures of it, the Monster truck Mini deserves a mention, pretty mad looking car and I’m sure fun to drive
With the sun now beginning to make an appearance and with it nicely cleaned Rick decided to draw some attention to the stand by firing up the Skyline and showing of his de-cat exhaust flame trick, with a few revs of the engine it was soon backfiring and popping very loudly, very quickly a crowd had surrounded the back of the car eager to see what was going to happen, and once warmed up properly he failed to disappoint with some nice flames firing out the end of the exhaust. Very cool indeed!
It was now time for Rick and Tim to do the other thing they were there for which was a DJ session over the far side of the show, off we trekked to watch them at it, and although the set up wasn’t of the highest quality they still managed to pump out the tunes and get the feet tapping.
With the sun now beaming down and it getting on for lunch the barbeque was fired up and after a healthy does of burnt food inside us we sat around for a while and soaked up some rays.
But soon it was back down to business with Rick giving us another flame display, even better than the first I might add. Another walk about to take some more pictures and it was becoming clear that the previous nights fun was beginning to catch up on a few of our members, and I must admit the sun was beginning to take a grip on most peoples skin, including mine. We chatted for a while to a few of the Girl Racer members and then packed up our belongings to begin the cruise home.
A cruise that was almost as incident packed as the journey out due to a certain mental lorry driver who decided to reverse into a car at the Dartford Tunnel, and was about to cut the front of mine off had it not been for a few people shouting at him and banging on his door.
So all in all a very good day, warm and eventually sunny, a select but none the less impressive selection of cars, great company and a large dose of fun.
